A Clearer View of the Ocular Surface

Before surgical planning begins, understanding the ocular surface can help inform the next step.1

ScoutPro™ provides objective tear osmolarity results to support dry eye evaluation alongside other clinical methods.7

Measurable Clinical Data

Adds objective tear osmolarity results to support the broader clinical evaluation.7

Dry Eye Assessment Support

Supports evaluation of patients suspected of having dry eye disease.7

Ocular Surface Insight

Helps provide a more complete view of ocular surface health.1,7

Objective Planning Input

Gives surgeons and teams an additional data point before next-step planning.7

Preoperative OSD Algorithm

Corneal health can significantly impact surgical outcomes for patients.1 Tear hyperosmolarity is toxic to the eye, damaging corneal cells and contributing to refractive instability.2-4

Up to 80% pie chart icon

Up to 80% of cataract surgery patients may be at risk for ocular surface disease, but they do not always present with symptoms.6

1 in 6 icon

1 in 6 cataract patients with hyperosmolarity risk a >1.0 D variation in keratometry measurements. This variability increases the chances of postoperative refractive surprises.4

The ASCRS recommends pre-operative tear osmolarity testing to identify visually significant ocular surface disease.7

Hyperosmolarity has been shown to create light scatter equivalent to a grade 2–3 cataract.8,9

Additionally, tear hyperosmolarity makes refractive misses and patient dissatisfaction more likely after cataract surgery.5

Two bar charts compare patients with normal tear osmolarity versus hyperosmolarity. Hyperosmolar patients had more refractive misses over 1.0 D (9.8% vs. 0%) and greater dissatisfaction (17.1% vs. 2.5%), about seven times higher.

I get asked, “How important is osmolarity testing in modern cataract-refractive surgery?”

And my response is, “How important is quality of vision for your patient outcomes?”
